HYDROGEN Modern Rotary Evaporator Turnkey System Designed for: Benchtop Scale Solvent Recovery Solvent Recovery Throughput: Up to 3L of ethanol per hour EcoChyll Technology: Eliminates dry ice, recirculating chiller, water and antifreeze Footprint: 1.8 square feet Water Evaporation Yes Reduce electricity consumption by over 50%, never have to change chiller fluids again, and dramatically decrease your run times! Ecodyst’s Hydrogen is a high performance, self-cooling rotary evaporator with a compact footprint. The eco-friendly, energy-efficient, sustainable rotovap uses a built-in condenser which eliminates the need for glycol, dry ice or water while massively reducing coolant pull-down times. By eliminating coolant and cutting electricity use by more than half, the Hydrogen delivers substantial operating cost savings. By combining the functions of a recirculating chiller and a rotary evaporator in the same compact body, what would ordinarily take two pieces of equipment is done with just one, saving precious lab space while eliminating messy tubing and leaks. Using the pioneering EcoChyll® direct cooling technology, the X3 bridges the gap between small-footprint, benchtop rotary evaporators and our larger, higher-capacity EcoChyll evaporators. With a true 12 L capacity and compact form factor, it holds more solvent than a “20 L” rotary evaporator while having a faster evaporation rate and much shorter total run time. The EcoChyll® X3 is routinely used downstream of botanical extractions via BHO, CO2, or ethanol. With twin metallic condenser coils, the EcoChyll® X3 carries out continuous direct-cooling of incoming vapors in an efficient and environmentally-friendly manner. No glycol or other coolant is necessary, start-up times are far shorter, and total energy usage is less than half. EcoChyll® evaporators also free up operator time due to low-intervention requirements. Because the evaporation flask is stirred rather than rotating, residual product can simply be drained from a valve. The EcoChyll X3 can also be set up for more complete process automation, saving time and money without compromising the quality of your results. Setting New Standards in Evaporation Efficiency Rotary evaporators haven’t evolved much over the past 50 years. The basic operation has been the same. We wanted to make something better, so we rethought the rotary evaporator from the ground up. We asked ourselves: How could we more efficiently heat the evaporation flask? (A: Sit the flask directly in a heating mantle.) How could we minimize handling of large glassware? (A: Make the flask stationary so it can have a drain.) How could we decrease run time? (A: We need to reduce the coolant pull-down time while increasing the evaporation rate.) How could we make the cooling process faster and more efficient? (A: Pump refrigerant directly from the compressor through the condenser.) When you answer all those questions, you get the EcoChyll; a system which can render the legacy rotary evaporators obsolete. You get shorter runs, faster start-up, less manual activity, and far greater energy efficiency than a rotary evaporator. For more information, contact us today. See all models and sizes. This leads to pull-down times of just minutes while using far less electricity than a recirculating chiller. Replacing a rotating flask with an upright, stationary flask which is stirred with an overhead stirrer and heated on a heating mantle. The direct heating of the flask is more energy efficient, the upright flask allows you to use the full 50 L volume, and the stirring is more energy efficient than rotating a large flask. This also allows us to put a drain on the evaporating flask for convenient collection of residual product – something which traditional rotary evaporators cannot do! The EcoChyll X5 is sold as a turnkey system with on-site installation and training available. You’ll never want to use a traditional rotary evaporator again! Ecodyst Evaporators: Friendly to Your Budget and the Planet The 50L EcoChyll X5 does the work of two 50L rotary evaporators while costing less than one! Additionally, your operating costs will be much lower. Electricity usage will be cut by more than half, you’ll never have to buy and replace the glycol or other refrigerant for a recirculating chiller, and you’ll have fewer incidents of glass breakage and replacement since all the glassware is stationary. Actually, let’s try: In terms of evaporation rate, the 72L EcoChyll X7 is the same as TWO high-end 50L rotary evaporators. In terms of capacity, the 72L X7 is almost as much as THREE 50L rotary evaporators. The X7 uses less electricity than a SINGLE 50L rotary evaporator. So in some ways, you can compare them, but the X7 doesn’t make a 50L rotary evaporator look very good. In many other ways, the X7 is totally unique. For instance: A direct cooling system eliminates the need for glycol and cools the two condensers to -40°C in just a few minutes! The direct cooling system is far more energy efficient than a recirculating chiller. The X7 doesn’t rotate! It is stirred, instead. Not only is stirring more energy efficient, This lets us heat the evaporation flask with a heating mantle, which is also more energy efficient. It furthermore lets you use the full 72L flask capacity, and when your run is over you can simply drain the flask from the base. Easy! The EcoChyll® X7 is an evolution of the industrial rotary evaporator in just about every way: efficiency, capacity, throughput, and convenience. Industrial-Scale Rotary Vacuum Evaporators from Ecodyst Ecodyst was established with the aim of improving on the performance of standard laboratory rotary evaporators (rotovaps), setting a new benchmark for performance in botanical extractions and solvent recovery. The EcoChyll® X7 rotary vacuum evaporator delivers on that promise for the industrial-scale researcher, providing a scalable modular solution that performs on numerous key fronts for the budget-conscious operator. You could purchase many 50L evaporator setups, taking up lots of space, driving costs way up, and requiring a full-time technician to manage. You could purchase industrial equipment like falling film evaporators which are huge, extremely expensive, and difficult to maintain. Or you could purchase an EcoChyll X9. With a true 200L capacity, the X9 has the highest capacity of any rotary-style evaporator in the world, capable of replacing 8 standard 50 liter rotary evaporators. Capable of evaporating up to 120 liters per hour of ethanol, it is also far faster than any rotary evaporator. While evaporating at a rate as fast as eight 50L rotary evaporator setups from other leading brands, it costs less than two. Operating costs are also far lower due to the EcoChyll’s energy efficient design, lower manpower requirement, and elimination of the need for glycol or other refrigerant. REQUEST QUOTE A Breakthrough in Efficiency & Usability Ecodyst pioneered two major advancements in rotary evaporator design. First, it pumps refrigerant directly from its compressor through metal cooling coils. Secondly, it replaces the rotating flask in a bath with a stationary, stirred evaporating flask on a heating mantle. This provides many advantages, including: Massive improvements in energy efficiency compared to 50L rotovaps: 50 – 80% less energy used per unit solvent evaporated Because it doesn’t need to rotate, we put a valve on the evaporating flask for easy drainage. No need for glycol or other coolant fluids. Vastly reduced startup time. The directly cooled condensers are cold in just minutes, and the direct heat of the mantle heats the flask contents faster. Less need to handle large glassware reduces the risk of breakage and improves lab safety. The upright orientation of the flask allows for use of its full capacity. 200L means you can actually put 200L in it! Boost Your Cannabis Processing Productivity In addition to its throughput, cannabis processing operations can benefit from the EcoChyll’s ability to perform decarboxylation. A decarb using a reactor or vacuum oven can take 8 hours to a full day. The X9’s even, fast, and powerful heating can perform a decarboxylation in as little as 2 hours. Large-Volume Evaporation Units from Ecodyst Ecodyst’s proprietary self-cooling technology provides chemists across industries with a powerful new solution for high-throughput evaporation challenges. The EcoChyll® X9 evaporation unit delivers unprecedented efficiency improvements, exceptionally low operating costs, and excellent usability for industrial-scale needs. If you have, we bet you can relate to a few things: 1. The size of the equipment feels industrial, but the capacity does not. (Whose marketing department decided to call it a “50 liter” system when it can only hold 25?) 2. The time it takes to start up the system is so long that you have to plan it into your workflow. 3. You cautiously hold your breath every time you need to handle that evaporation flask, which you do every run because you need to remove the residue from the flask. 4. The chillers can struggle to keep up, or don’t get cold enough for you to get great recovery rates. 5. They use a huge amount of electricity. Large-scale rotary evaporators are just scaled-up versions of smaller benchtop rotovaps, with the same problems benchtop rotovaps have plus more due to the scaled up size. Why can’t you have an industrial rotary evaporator without any of these problems? You can, because now you can have an EcoChyll. Take me to the Systems We completely rethought what an industrial rotary evaporator should be, introducing a number of major improvements: 1. The EcoChyll eliminates the recirculating chiller, replacing it with a cooling system which feeds refrigerant directly from a compressor to the condenser’s cooling coil. This leads to a vastly lower pull-down time, over 95% faster than a recirculating chiller. It maintains temperature far more easily, improving recovery and protecting your vacuum pump. It does this while using less than a quarter of the electricity of a comparable recirculating chiller, which is the most electricity-intensive component of a rotary evaporator setup. 2. The EcoChyll uses a stirred upright flask instead of a rotating flask. This likewise uses much less electricity while allowing us to put a drain on the flask. Run over? Need to get your residue from the flask? Simple – just open a valve. No more handling a giant, fragile flask all the time. Ever have a rotation motor or flask lift give up on you? You would need to call a service technician. On an EcoChyll, there is no lift motor and if the overhead stirrer ever breaks, you can replace it very easily, helping you extend the functional life of your unit with minimal cost and maintenance. Perhaps most importantly: you can use the true, full-flask volume! A 50-liter system actually allows you to do 50 liter runs (and we have systems up to 200 liters). 3. The EcoChyll evaporation systems heat the flask using a large heating mantle instead of a water or oil-filled bath. This direct contact with the heating source is more efficient, saving electricity and providing faster warm-up times. What does all this mean for you? Faster processing, with recovery rates of up to 100 liters per hour (for the 200 L EcoChyll X9). Energy savings of approximately 80% compared to traditional rotary evaporators (on a per-liter-evaporated basis). Less glassware handling, and therefore less possibility for breakage. 12l EcoChyll x3 20l EcoChyll x3 22l EcoChyll X5 50l EcoChyll X5 22l EcoChylL X7 50l EcoChylL X7 72l EcoChyll X7 100l EcoChyll X7 200l EcoChyll X9 --- --- title: "Small Benchtop Rotovaps" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/small-benchtop-rotovaps/" lastmod: "2022-08-22T17:41:10+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- Small Benchtop Rotovaps Highly-Efficient Rotary Evaporators For Budget Constrained Users Ecodyst rotary evaporators are the fastest and most efficient rotary evaporation systems laboratories have ever seen. With our direct cooling technology, we are able to provide evaporation systems which have extremely fast start-up times while using a fraction of the electricity of traditional rotary evaporators. -40°C cooling of the condenser within one minute No coolant liquid to change No separate recirculating chiller unit 50%+ electricity savings Start your run in 90% less time Hydrogen The most efficient benchtop rotary evaporator ever built, delivered in the most compact package. EcoChyll X1 Bye bye to recirculating chillers. Pair any benchtop rotary evaporator with an EcoChyll X1 for higher recovery rates, lower electricity usage, and faster start-up times. How is Ecodyst different? Rotary evaporators didn’t change much from their invention in 1957 up until the creation of the Ecochyll. Cooling a condenser meant either using dry ice, and therefore a lot of handling of a very fragile and expensive piece of glassware, or using a recirculating chiller. As just about all users of rotary evaporators know, the chiller is almost always the rate-limiting factor in the startup of the system. What you might not know is that they usually use significantly more electricity than the rest of the system – the rotovap itself and the vacuum pump – combined. Recirculating chillers are so energy intensive because they are very inefficient. A compressed gas (the refrigerant) is cycled through a compressor used to cool a coolant liquid (the liquid you put in the reservoir of the chiller), and then that liquid is circulated to the condenser of the rotary evaporator. There are two major inefficiencies here: The heat exchange between the refrigerant and the coolant is far from perfect, and only gets less efficient as the coolant liquid cools. The volume of the coolant liquid is comparatively very large, meaning the chiller has to remove a lot of heat before the liquid is cool enough to start the run. What Ecodyst has done is created a rotary evaporator where the refrigerant is pumped directly through the rotovap’s condenser. This eliminates both of these inefficiencies, creating a system with a very low energy consumption and extremely fast pull-down time. You can start your run in a handful of minutes, and feel good about conserving electricity in the process. --- --- title: "Our Mission" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/our-mission/" lastmod: "2025-09-10T04:39:36+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- About Ecodyst The Modern Rotary Evaporator Designed for Scientists by Scientists™ Our Mission Is to continue to modernize the rotary evaporator by developing the most effective and sought-after products on the market today. This disruptive technology will ultimately set new standards worldwide for scientific instruments. “My laboratory in the Department of Chemistry at UC Berkeley has been happy to acquire two EcoChyll in 2016 and 2017, and we have been thoroughly impressed with the system’s performance. We have found the EcoChyll system to provide superior performance in terms of cooling. Our ability to control the temperature of the cold finger is critical. This has prevented the freezing of condensing solvents, which reduces efficiency. An aspect that we especially like is that the EcoChyll can be used during holidays/weekends when dry ice (for cooling purposes) is not delivered to our department.” Richmond Sarpong, Ph.D. Professor of Chemistry, UC Berkeley “EcoChyll has been a great addition to our laboratory. We have been beyond satisfied with how much more efficiently and faster we can evaporate solvents using EcoChyll, and the fact that we don’t have to deal with the hassle of having a reliable and continuous source of dry ice, specially during the holidays. Additionally, we have been more than happy with the level and quality of customer service that we have received from Ecodyst!” Dr. Yasamin Moazami Postdoctoral Fellow, NC State University “Replacing our dry ice/isopropanol condenser for the EcoChyll has made rotovapping much more convenient — we can leave the rotovap without having to worry about the condenser warming up.” Dr. Kevin Kou Postdoctoral Fellow, UC Berkeley “Not only the best rotary evaporation unit in the cosmos, best customer service of any product I have purchased!” James Hurlston CEO of WNC Purifications “The Ecodyst system (50L EcoChyll X7) allows us to continuously evaporate ethanol during production, with minimal handling due to the inventive drip-feed mechanic. The bottom discharge port and simple operation of the system make it easy to work with during day-to-day operations.” Ties Van de Laar PhD, Senior Researcher, Becanex GmbH “I know I’m not the first to say this but our addition of the X7 was one of best pieces of equipment I’ve purchased in years. It runs circles around two 100L units from one of the leading companies in the industry and it’s the 72L unit. It’s refreshing to buy a piece of equipment that actually performs as advertised.” Jack Tatum CEO of Isolera Extracts “We recently retrofitted one of our existing rotovaps with the Ecochyll X1 chiller unit and are very happy with its performance. A simple flip of the switch and the chiller is ready to go in minutes. It’s great to be free from the hassles of dry ice – no more constant refilling of the trap during solvent collection. So far it has worked well with all typical solvents with no noticeable solvent pass through. Convenient temperature control also allows for removal of water without excessive frost buildup. Thanks to George and the team at Ecodyst for putting together a great product!” Chris MacNevin VP of Operations, NIRvana Sciences “I’ve been using Ecodyst’s 50 Liter EcoChyll unit for over 2 years now and couldn’t imagine life in the lab without it. The advantages it offers over traditional rotary evaporators is truly something special. The condenser coils reach temperature (and hold!) in only 30 seconds cutting down warm up times by about an hour, and the discharge valve not only saves time and energy by not having to pour out of a 50-liter flask, but also allows for Clean In Place (CIP) processes saving even more time and energy that is usually attributed to non-production overhead. We have 2 100 Liter units on the way and I’m never going back to the rotovaps of old.” Drew Ford Chief Scientific Officer, Starling Brands and Kase Manufacturing “The [EcoChyll] interface was simple and intuitive, and it was very easy to use. I was surprised at how quickly it reached -40 degrees. It’s clearly a better alternative to using dry ice!” Fritz Seidi Graduate Student, Stanford University --- --- title: "Academia" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/academia/" lastmod: "2024-08-27T23:19:50+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- Ecodyst’s Impact on Academia Transforming Solvent Recovery and Concentration in Academic Research Ecodyst is a pioneering company in the field of eco-friendly laboratory equipment, catering to both the pharmaceutical industry and academic research. Without further ado, let’s jump right into it: 1-What are rotary evaporators used for? 1. Concentration of Solutions Rotary evaporators are commonly used to concentrate solutions by removing excess solvent, leaving behind a more concentrated sample. This process is vital in chemical synthesis and sample preparation for analytical techniques. For example: In pharmaceutical research, concentrating drug candidates simplifies further testing. In academic laboratories, concentration is used to isolate reaction products for characterization or storage. The combination of heat, vacuum, and rotation in rotary evaporators speeds up solvent removal while minimizing the degradation of sensitive compounds. 2. Solvent Recovery Many industries strive to optimize resource usage, and rotary evaporators are indispensable for solvent recovery. Solvent recovery not only reduces operational costs but also minimizes environmental waste. For instance: In the pharmaceutical industry, expensive solvents used in drug synthesis can be recovered and reused. Green chemistry initiatives benefit from solvent recovery processes to lower their ecological footprint. Rotary evaporators can recover solvents with high purity, ensuring they meet stringent reuse requirements. 3. Purification of Compounds Rotary evaporators are instrumental in purifying target compounds by removing volatile impurities or residual solvents. This is particularly important in: Organic synthesis: Purifying reaction products for further experimentation or application. Medicinal chemistry: Isolating bioactive compounds from complex mixtures for pharmaceutical development. The gentle evaporation conditions maintain the integrity of sensitive molecules, such as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), while achieving high levels of purity. 4. Extraction and Fractionation In the isolation of natural products or separation of components with different boiling points, rotary evaporators are invaluable. For example: In pharmacognosy, they are used to extract and concentrate bioactive compounds from plants or microorganisms. In analytical laboratories, they fractionate mixtures for easier analysis by chromatography or spectroscopy. By carefully controlling temperature and pressure, researchers can selectively evaporate certain components without affecting the stability of more fragile substances. 5. Sample Preparation in Research Many analytical techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or mass spectrometry (MS), require samples to be free from excess solvent. Rotary evaporators simplify this preparation step: They allow rapid removal of solvents without excessive heating, protecting thermally sensitive analytes. The use of rotavaps ensures consistency in sample preparation, improving reproducibility in research findings. This application is especially important in drug discovery, where preparing clean, stable samples is a critical prerequisite for high-throughput screening. 6. Food and Beverage Industry Applications Rotary evaporators are increasingly used in food science to innovate and enhance flavors: Flavor Concentration: Chefs and food scientists use them to concentrate natural flavors in liquids, such as fruit juices or coffee extracts, and even craft cocktails creating richer culinary experiences. Extraction of Essential Oils: For natural flavoring agents, rotavaps isolate essential oils from plants like citrus or herbs. Dehydration of Ingredients: Some food producers use rotary evaporators to gently reduce water content in heat-sensitive ingredients without altering their natural properties. This equipment is popular in molecular gastronomy and artisanal food production for its ability to preserve delicate aromas and flavors. 7. Cannabis and Botanical Extracts Rotary evaporators play a key role in the cannabis and herbal supplement industries: After extraction processes like ethanol or CO₂ extraction, rotavaps are used to remove residual solvents, ensuring product purity and compliance with regulatory standards. They help refine and concentrate cannabinoids or other bioactive compounds into oils, tinctures, or concentrates. Temperature control is crucial here to avoid degrading terpenes or cannabinoids, which contribute to the therapeutic and sensory properties of the final product. Rotary evaporators ensure consistency and scalability in these industries, which are driven by high-quality and standardized outputs. You can read more about it in one of our previous blog posts on cannabis extraction. 2-How does a rotary evaporator work? A rotary evaporator, or “rotavap,” is designed to efficiently and gently remove solvents from liquid samples, typically under reduced pressure. Its operation combines principles of vacuum distillation, heat transfer, and centrifugal force to achieve rapid and controlled solvent evaporation. This is achieved through: Enhanced Evaporation via Rotation: The flask rotates continuously, creating a thin film of liquid on the inner surface. This film increases the solvent’s surface area, enabling faster evaporation compared to static systems. Vacuum-Induced Boiling Point Reduction: By operating under reduced pressure, the boiling point of the solvent decreases significantly. For example, water, which boils at 100°C under atmospheric pressure, may boil at ~35°C under vacuum. This allows for solvent removal at temperatures that preserve thermally sensitive compounds. Heat Transfer in the Bath: The heating bath provides consistent thermal energy to the sample. The gentle heating, combined with reduced pressure, prevents overheating and decomposition of delicate molecules, such as pharmaceutical compounds or natural extracts. The solvent vapor rises into the condenser, where it encounters a cold surface. The temperature gradient causes the vapor to condense back into liquid form. This step efficiently separates the solvent from the sample while allowing the solvent to be collected for reuse. 3-Is rotary evaporation the same as distillation? Rotary evaporation and distillation are related processes, both based on the principle of separating components by exploiting differences in their boiling points. However, they differ in design, methodology, and applications, particularly in scientific and laboratory contexts. Rotary Evaporation Rotary evaporation is a specialized technique designed for the efficient removal of solvents under reduced pressure, commonly employed in chemical, biochemical, and pharmacological laboratories. By rotating a sample flask, the liquid forms a thin film, significantly increasing surface area and facilitating rapid evaporation. This process is conducted under vacuum, which lowers the boiling point of the solvent, enabling solvent removal at lower temperatures—critical for preserving thermolabile compounds. Rotary evaporation is predominantly used for solvent recovery, sample concentration, or purification in analytical and preparative workflows. Distillation Distillation, by contrast, is a more general separation process that involves the boiling of a liquid mixture and subsequent condensation of its vapor. Unlike rotary evaporation, traditional distillation does not inherently involve vacuum or sample rotation and is typically used for separating liquids with distinct boiling points. Applications range from laboratory-scale purification to large-scale industrial operations, such as petrochemical processing, water purification, or ethanol production. There you have it! We’ve tackled some of the internet’s most commonly asked questions about rotary evaporation, breaking down essential concepts and addressing key concerns. Whether you’re optimizing workflows, troubleshooting, or exploring the limits of what rotary evaporators can achieve, a firm grasp of these fundamentals is crucial. Stay tuned! --- --- title: "Rotavap Pet Peeves: How to Leak Test your Rotavap" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/rotavap-pet-peeves-how-to-leak-test-your-rotavap/" lastmod: "2024-12-31T04:58:38+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- Picture this: you’ve meticulously prepared your sample, carefully set up your rotavap, and are ready to evaporate your solvent. But instead of a smooth, efficient process, you’re met with abnormally fluctuating vacuum readings, erratic bumping, and the sinking feeling that something’s not right. Chances are, you’ve got a leak. Rotavap leaks are a common source of frustration in the lab, leading to wasted time, compromised samples, and often a frantic search for the culprit. This post will cut through the confusion, providing a practical guide to identifying and fixing those pesky leaks, so you can get back to what matters: your research. Identifying Potential Leak Sources Glassware: Cracks and Chips: Even minor imperfections can lead to significant leaks. Inspect the glassware thoroughly for any visible damage, especially around the joints and seals. If you want to take it a step further, you can use a magnifying glass or other visual aids to identify hairline cracks. Joints and Seals: Ensure that all joints are properly greased with a suitable lubricant and tightly connected. A poorly greased joint or a loose connection can result in air ingress. Check for any signs of wear or damage on the O-rings. Replace worn or damaged O-rings promptly. Use appropriately sized clips to help tightly secure glass joints and prevent leaks which may occur during operation. Vacuum Pump: Filters and Valves: Clogged filters and faulty valves can hinder the vacuum pump’s performance and introduce air into the system. Clean or replace filters as required, and ensure that valves operate smoothly. Check for any signs of wear or damage on the valve seals. Tubing and Connections: Wear and Tear: Over time, tubing can become brittle, develop cracks, or become loose. Inspect tubing for any signs of damage and replace any worn or damaged sections. Pay particular attention to areas where the tubing is frequently flexed or subjected to stress. Loose Connections: Ensure that all tubing connections are secure and free of leaks. Use clamps or other securing methods to prevent accidental disconnections. Check for any signs of corrosion or damage on the fittings. Leak Detection Techniques Bubble Test: Submerge suspected leak areas in a soapy water solution. The formation of bubbles indicates a leak. Pay close attention to joints, seals, and any visible cracks or imperfections. Use a fine-tipped brush to apply the soapy water solution to hard-to-reach areas. This test can also be performed on a fully assembled rotary evaporator setup. Put a moderate amount of soapy water onto the area you believe to be cracked or loose, then engage the vacuum. If you see the soapy water foaming, or suds being pulled into the glassware or tubing, then that indicates a leak. Note that a shallow vacuum, i.e. higher pressure, and slower flow rate works best for this test. Pressure Test: De-pressurize the system with an inert gas, such as nitrogen or air. Monitor the pressure gauge for any significant drops, which may signify a leak. Listen for any hissing sounds that may indicate a leak. Use a pressure gauge with a high degree of accuracy to ensure reliable readings. Troubleshooting Tips to Prevent Leaks from Forming Cleanliness: Ensure that all components are clean and dry before assembly. Grease joints with a suitable lubricant to ensure a tight seal. Avoid excessive grease, as this can lead to contamination. Clean up any excess grease with a lint-free cloth. Regular Maintenance: Periodically inspect and replace worn-out components, such as gaskets and O-rings. Develop a regular maintenance schedule to ensure that the rotary evaporator is always in top condition. Proper Technique: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for assembly and operation. Be gentle when handling glassware to avoid accidental breakage. Store flasks appropriately when not in use to avoid unnecessary impact and potential damage. Flasks stored in drawers should always be stored in a fully-sealed, padded container such as the styrofoam packaging which most ship in. Flasks in cabinets or shelves, if not in their original packaging, should be stored on flask stands. Maintaining a leak-free rotavap system is essential for efficient and successful solvent evaporation. By understanding the common sources of leaks and implementing the leak detection techniques described in this post, you can proactively prevent costly downtime and ensure the integrity of your experiments. Regular inspection of glassware, vacuum pump components, and tubing, combined with routine maintenance and careful handling, will significantly reduce the risk of leaks. Remember, a little preventative care goes a long way in maintaining the optimal performance of your rotavap and safeguarding your valuable research. By following these best practices, you can ensure consistent, reliable results and maximize the lifespan of your equipment! --- --- title: "Rotary Evaporators in Modern Culinary Labs: Bridging Precision Science and Gastronomic Innovation" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/rotary-evaporators-in-modern-culinary-labs-bridging-precision-science-and-gastronomic-innovation/" lastmod: "2024-12-31T05:06:42+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- Rotary evaporators are increasingly becoming common tools in avant-garde culinary environments. Wholesale legislative changes have taken place in the USA and Canada, shifting an illicit, illegal market into a legitimate, multi-billion dollar industry. Products which are based on cannabinoid extractions are increasing in value significantly. CBD oil in particular is finding popularity as a medicinal and therapeutic product and one of the key areas of debate in the sale of CBD products is that of virgin versus decarb CBD oil. What is Decarboxylation? Decarboxylation is a critical process in cannabis production and consumption. It occurs when cannabis is cured, allowing the THCA (Tetrachydrocannabinolic Acid) or CBDA (Cannabidolic Acid) inside cannabis buds to be converted to THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) or CBD (cannabidol). This process is a chemical reaction which removes a carboxyl group with heat or chemicals. The Process of Decarboxylation Traditionally, solvent recovery and decarboxylation systems are complicated, modular setups which are made up of a number of interconnected instruments. Decarboxylation traditionally needs a large reactor with a chiller, another chiller for the condenser, and a vacuum pump. This is to decarboxylate over long periods of around 8-10 hours. Other decarboxylation equipment such as vacuum ovens take even longer, between 14 and 24 hours and has a limited capacity. These setups are both large, taking up greater space in workplaces and are expensive, requiring intervention from users to ensure the greatest results are yielded. Decarboxylation systems which have a reactor and chiller take a long time due to the use of thermal fluid to heat extracts to the correct decarb temperature. Using this method takes a long time as it leads to inefficient heat transfer and heat loss. Decarboxylation Solutions from Ecodyst At Ecodyst, we are experts in organic chemistry and have created a new evaporation system which can be used in both solvent recovery and decarboxylation. Our software uses direct-cooling technology in conjunction with continuous feeds to preserve vacuum conditions across the entire extraction process. Our EcoChyll® range of evaporators outperform traditional decarboxylation systems in many ways. Not only are decarboxylation solutions from Ecodyst cheaper than the traditional solutions, but the EcoChyll® line is able to decarb comparable amounts of cannabis oils in less than two hours. This is largely due to the efficient heating mantle design that can get to optimal decarboxylation temperatures in a few minutes whilst keeping a steady heat. This heating mantle means that our actual volume evaporators and the EcoChyll® intelligent self-cooling technology only need a single action to start continuous decarboxylation of large amounts of sample materials at extraordinary scales. Ecodyst offers evaporation systems appropriate for all levels of cannabis decarboxylation. If you would like to find out more about our products, contact us today. --- --- title: "Decarboxylation: Choosing the Right Evaporator" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/decarboxylation-choosing-right-evaporator/" lastmod: "2022-07-12T12:57:51+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- After decades of prohibition, cannabis and hemp legislation is gradually relaxing around the world. Wholesale legislative changes in Canada and the US have transformed an illicit market into a legitimate, multi-billion dollar industry in just a few short years. Products based on cannabinoid extractions have become high-value commodities, particularly cannabidiol (CBD) oils which are marketed as medicinal and therapeutic. The rate of change in the cannabis and hemp industry is extremely rapid, with growers and retailers alike vying for a competitive edge in an already over-saturated market. One of the key dichotomies in the sale of CBD products is that of raw versus decarb CBD oil. Decarboxylation is an inherent process in cannabis consumption. In laboratory settings, it describes specific methods of extracting desired natural compounds from the plant. This article aims to explore the process of decarbing cannabis in more depth, while offering some insights into choosing the right system for decarboxylation. What is Decarboxylation? In cannabis extraction process, decarboxylation, often shortened to decarb, refers to the transformation of the THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid) or CBDA (Cannabidiolic Acid) into THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) or CBD (cannabidiol), respectively via heating and drying. Decarboxylation in scientific terms is a type of chemical reaction removing a carboxyl group either with heat and/or chemicals. Conventional Decarboxylation Instruments Traditional solvent recovery and decarboxylation systems are complex, modular setups comprising several interconnected instruments. Decarboxylation alone requires a bulky reactor with a chiller, an additional chiller for the condenser, and a vacuum pump, to decarb cannabis over extended periods (8 – 10 hours). Other decarb equipment such as vacuum ovens take significantly longer (14-24 hours) with limited capacity. These expensive setups have large workplace footprints and demand consistent operator intervention to get the greatest value results. Why do reactor/chiller decarb systems take a long time to decarb? It is because using thermal fluid to heat the extract to optimal decarb temperature (250oF or 121oC) takes a long time due to inefficient heat transfer and heat lose. Leading-Edge Decarb Evaporators At Ecodyst®, we have leveraged our expertise in organic chemistry in the development of a unique evaporation system for solvent recovery and decarboxylation. Using pioneering direct-cooling technology and continuous feeds to maintain vacuum conditions throughout extraction processes. The EcoChyll® range exceeds traditional decarb systems on virtually every front. Available at a lower up-front price point with consistently greater returns on investment in virtually every respect, the EcoChyll® line can decarb comparable volumes of cannabis oils in just under 2 hours. This is possible through our efficient heating mantle design that reaches optimal decarb temps in matter of minutes and maintain heat. With efficient heating mantle, our actual volume evaporators and the world’s most efficient EcoChyll® intelligent self-cooling technology require just a single action to initiate continuous decarboxylation of high volumes of sample materials at unprecedented scales. From the 200L capacity EcoChyll® X9 to the medium-scale 12L EcoChyll® X3, Ecodyst provides evaporation systems suitable for every level of cannabis decarboxylation. Sovlent recovery with in situ decarb that saves significant extraction process time is a desirable feature most extraction processors desire. Both processes are used to separate and purify elements meaning they are helpful means of recovering a range of chemical components. This article will detail both processes and how they measure up against one another. What is Solvent Recovery Solvent recovery or solvent extraction is a technique in which chemical compounds are isolated in accordance with their solubilities. Solvent recovery is employed in a range of industries from vegetable oils, perfume, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, cannabis production and mining. Solvent recovery is important because it is used to isolate hazardous materials from sediments and sludge and separate the helpful components from the debris. An example of this is solvent recovery in the petrochemical refining industry, where it is used to separate petrol by causing them to float to the top or sink to the bottom for easy removal. Solvent recovery is also important in the hazardous waste industry as it decreases the levels of hazardous waste that needs to be treated. Solvent recovery does not damage the substance which is extracted, just separates the compounds. These compounds are then extracted to be used for a range of purposes according to the industry. Solvent recovery is a means of purifying elements and identify different chemical components. Rotary evaporators use evaporation to gently and efficiently remove solvents from a range of sample types, including both organic and inorganic analytes and polymeric materials. The sample is heated whilst its boiling point is lowered by a vacuum which is formed by the rotary evaporator. This means that solvent recovery is possible at a much lower temperature. What is Solvent Distillation? Solvent distillation is the solvent separation involving application of heat to separate a mixture of liquid of two or more two or more substances. The solvent mixture is heated to boiling point and as a vapor its piped away to a new storage container in which is will cool and condense to an almost pure quality. This results in a distilled solvent which can be reused and wastage which can be disposed of accordingly. Rotary evaporators are sometimes used in distillation applications as it is faster than traditional techniques as solutions are distilled under reduced pressure at a lower temperature, speeding up the process because of the larger surface area. The Key Differences Between Solvent Recovery and Distillation The key difference between solvent recovery and distillation is that solvent recovery purifies a substance whether it is in a solid or liquid phase whereas solvent distillation can only purify a substance in the liquid phase. This means that solvent recovery can be used for more applications and is a more cost-effective solution. Rotary evaporators from Ecodyst can be used for both distillation and solvent recovery. The purpose of this is to stop vapors from being evacuated outside of the container, causing contamination of the equipment. Vacuum pumps remove gas molecules or air particles from a sealed volume, changing the pressure within. This article aims to explain how cold traps for vacuum pumps work, and how Ecodyst’s evaporators differ from this. How Does a Vacuum Pump Work? A vacuum pump’s key purpose is to alter the pressure in a contained space to form a partial or full vacuum. This process can be either mechanical or chemical. Gas molecules flow from high to low to fill the area of volume, attempting to equalize the pressure. This means that when a low-pressure space occurs, gas naturally moves from the high-pressure area until it has equalized. Vacuum pumps use this principle to move gas molecules from one region to the next by altering pressure states. Capture Vacuum Pumps Capture pumps have no moving parts and require extremely high vacuum pressure. Capture pumps use cold traps to trap gas molecules, drawing molecules inward to create a vacuum. Vacuum Pumps for Rotovaps In most rotovap applications, applying a vacuum pump is helpful and sometimes even entirely necessary. Vacuum pumps lower the pressure in the system, decreasing the boiling point temperature of the solvent meaning evaporation is faster and safer. Cold Traps and Vacuum Pumps Cold traps are generally placed between the vacuum pump and the rotovap to safeguard the pump from any additional contamination. Cold traps are usually a critical element of standard rotovaps as they catch any vapors that pass through the condenser. Cold traps are lined with lead and are connected to both the suction container and the vacuum pump. The cold trap adsorbs the condenser’s heat, ensuring temperatures stay low. This means that when gas moves through the water vapor and other gases solidify on the condenser, the degree of vacuum increases. Traditional Cold Traps Standard rotovaps used cold traps that were extremely inefficient to protect the vacuum pump. Cold traps must be extremely cold, resulting in liquid nitrogen, excessive amounts of tap water, and anti-freeze being used to maintain the temperature. These materials can be costly, and the frequent use of them uses huge amounts of energy, costing companies money and increasing the environmental impacts. A Better Way Instead of traditional cold traps stopping gases from reaching vacuum pumps, Ecodyst’s revolutionary new technology eliminates these costly and time-consuming problems. A high-efficiency condenser cooling system has been developed, offering continuous cooling, rapid condensation, and reduced evaporation time. However, in some applications, process fluid evaporates outside horizontal or vertical tubes. The process fluid will always evaporate downwards due to the effect of gravity as a continuous film, creating a film along the tube walls and falling downwards. A fluid distributor is created to maintain an even liquid distribution for every tube that the solution falls down. Falling film evaporators are widely used as an evaporation technique, however, they can be inefficient. This blog will explore the drawbacks of these evaporators, comparing them with rotary evaporators. How do Falling Film Evaporators Work? In most applications, the heating medium is on the outside of the tubes. High heat transfer coefficients are necessary to accomplish equally balanced heat transfer resistances. As such, the most commonly used heating medium is condensing steam. When fluids are internally evaporating, separation across the liquid phase (the solution) and the gaseous phase happens within the tubes. To uphold conservation of mass as this falls, the downward vapor velocity rises and this increases the force acting on the liquid film and thus the velocity of the solution. On the evaporating side of the tube, the heat transfer coefficient is often subject to the hydrodynamic flow conditions of the film. Unfortunately, the inner wall of the heat exchange tube of the falling film evaporators must be entirely wet and the membrane is not too thick. It is important to implement a precise design calculation of the material feed and the length of the heat exchange tube in order to meet the requirements. Additionally, the cost of falling film evaporators are extremely high as there are high design and manufacturing requirements. The rotary evaporator from Ecodyst does not use expensive rotary evaporator mechanisms, meaning they are an extremely cost-effective method of evaporation. Read More: The Hidden Cost of Falling Film Evaporators Falling film evaporators should also not be used for materials that are prone to fouling or are made up of solid suspended matter. Conversely, the rotary evaporator from Ecodyst can efficiently and gently remove solvents a broad range of sample types, this includes both organic and inorganic analytes as well as polymeric materials. The 200L EcoChyll X9 is a more effective alternative to a falling film evaporator. Falling film evaporators are often used in heat-sensitive products such as milk, fruit juice and pharmaceuticals as the time inside the heated tubes is very low and the materials are unlikely to spoil. Rotary evaporators also work well for these types of materials as samples are heated whilst the boiling points are decreased using a vacuum which is induced by the lab rotary evaporator. The boiling point decreases as the pressure of the liquid is decreased, and the solvent can be vaporized at a lower temperature than the standard boiling point. Falling film evaporators are also extremely large, requiring a high headroom and meaning that labs need to mindful of how to accommodate them. As the Ecochyll from Ecodyst combines the chiller within the equipment, it has a much smaller footprint and can be used in even small-scale laboratories. If you are looking to find out more about rotary evaporators and how they are superior to falling film evaporators, contact us today. --- --- title: "The Hidden Costs of Falling Films" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/the-hidden-costs-of-falling-films/" lastmod: "2022-07-13T02:05:09+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- How do falling films work and what are potential solutions to improve them? Falling films are usually only a partial solvent recovery tool. They often carry hidden costs and time loss because they are designed to recover just 70–80% of the solvents from a tincture of full spectrum oil suspended in a solvent. This requires manufacturers to purchase additional rotary evaporators that significantly slow the solvent recovery process. An alternative option for extractors to evaluate are all-in-one industrial solvent recovery and decarboxylation systems. The Facts About Falling Films If you have been around the hemp or cannabis sectors, you have likely heard of falling films. They are widely considered to be one of the fastest solvent recovery systems on the market. While they are a useful addition to the cannabis space, it is important to note that most falling films are not a one-stop-shop for solvent recovery. The vast majority can only evaporate 70–80% of solvents from a tincture, meaning extractors need to expend more capital on inefficient rotary evaporators that entirely erase the speed gain of a falling film. How Do Falling Films Work? Solvent recovery is one of the major bottlenecks in hemp and cannabis extraction processes. Whether manufacturers are using ethanol, CO2, or hydrocarbons to extract, they often use solvents such as ethanol in the initial extraction, the winterization or dewaxing, or the chromatography remediation phases. Falling films are distillation machines that use evaporation and condensation to “recover” solvents and isolate desired products such as full spectrum oil. Falling films operate on a basic principle: It is easier to evaporate a thin film of water than a large pool. Most falling films are large columns that contain multiple vertical heated tubes. Each tube channels a thin falling film of solution. In this way, solvents such as ethanol can be quickly vaporized while the remaining solution trickles down to be captured at the bottom of the machine. Falling Film Challenges Falling films work best with dilute solutions that are mostly ethanol. Once the majority (70–80%) of the solvents have been recovered, a tincture of full-spectrum oil and ethanol becomes viscous and does not move in a uniform film. At that stage, the small tubes within a falling film can become obstructed while the high temperatures burn the oil. This kind of obstruction has to be avoided at all costs. Falling films are notoriously difficult and costly to repair once the interior system has been compromised. For this reason, most falling films (except those that are hundreds of thousands of dollars) are only designed to reclaim 70–80% of solvents. They require extractors to make an additional purchase of a 20 L or 50 L rotary evaporator to “polish” off the residual ethanol. Depending on the company you choose, that additional rotary evaporator will easily add $50,000 to $80,000 to your price tag (not including additional shipping, certification, and training costs). In addition, the high operating temperatures that falling films use tend to spoil terpenes, flavonoids, and full-spectrum oil. Working with Real Numbers Let’s look at some numbers to understand the actual time loss involved. If you are working with 100 gallons of tincture that is 90% ethanol and 10% cannabidiol (CBD) oil, you can expect a 25 gph falling film to recover 67.5 gallons of ethanol in 2.5 h. However, at that point you would be left with 22.5 gallons of concentrated tincture that needs to be loaded into a 50 L rotary evaporator. A 50 L rotary evaporator can reach 4 gph for very dilute tincture solutions, but if you are working with concentrated tincture, you can expect to get half that rate, 2 gph. Your rate to evaporate 22.5 gallons would be at least 11 h of continuous operation, not including the time to load and empty the system. The total run time for that 25 gph falling film and 50 L rotary evaporator was 13.5 h to evaporate 90 gallons of ethanol. In other words, it’s really more of a 6.5 gph falling film. That’s not fast, especially considering the price you paid for two different systems and the work to load and empty the rotary evaporator every 2 h. The All-In-One Solution In conclusion, falling films are not fast solutions if they need to be paired with a rotary evaporator. They carry high hidden costs and labor expenditures. This is a problem my company has been working hard to innovate. Our industrial systems are designed to replace all this equipment. Working with the same 100 gallons of tincture as above, our system (X9 200 liter EcoChyll) could evaporate all 90 gallons of ethanol in 6 h. That is more than double the speed of the 25 gph falling film and 50 L rotary evaporator. In addition, our 200 L system could decarboxylate all 10 gallons of CBD oil immediately. It would take 2 h to decarboxylate. Normally, decarboxylation reactors that can handle 10 gallons of oil cost more than $60,000 and take 6 h to run. All told, you could spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a 25 gph falling film, a 50 L rotovap, and a 100 L decarboxylation reactor to process 100 gallons of tincture in 20 h (not including labor to load and empty systems). Or you could spend far less to buy one of our systems and do it all in 8 h. We are pretty proud of those numbers. You’ve made it to the right blog post! While the transition might appear straightforward, there are subtle nuances and strategic considerations to ensure a seamless and efficient scaling-up experience. This blog post will delve into the essential factors and practical tips that will guide you through the process, maximizing productivity and minimizing potential challenges. From carefully evaluating capacity requirements to optimizing energy consumption and ensuring a suitable footprint for your new equipment, we’ll provide actionable insights that will empower you to make informed decisions and achieve your scaling-up objectives. Stay tuned as we explore the intricacies of this transformative process and unlock the full potential of your rotary evaporator system. Factors that you need to consider when obtaining new equipment Capacity: This one is pretty straightforward. If you’re scaling up your process, the first thing you need to consider is the capacity of the new unit you are purchasing. The capacity of your new rotary evaporator can range from regular benchtop volumes all the way up to volumes as large as 200L (Volumes available at ecodyst being benchtop, 12L, 22L, 50L, 72L and 200L). Just make sure to keep in mind that you cannot process more than roughly half of your flask size for some models (since the flask is positioned at an angle, filling it at more than 50% its capacity increases the risk of foaming and bumping). If you’re using one of Ecodyst’s larger models (like the 200L) you can actually make use of all of the flask’s volume thanks to the overhead stirrer. Other factors you should consider when choosing a new model is the maximum evaporation rate, the temperature range, and rotation speed. Energy Consumption: If you’re scaling up your rotary evaporator, you are also going to scale up the energy consumption of your lab, and while there’s no way around this, there are always means to minimize your energy consumption, namely, using one of Ecodyst’s rotavaps.Let’s take the 200L EcoChyll X9 Hi-Speed Evaporator Complete System as an example: it boasts massive improvements in energy efficiency compared to 50L rotovaps: 50 – 80% less energy used per unit solvent evaporated, and it has a vastly reduced startup time (the directly cooled condensers are cold in just minutes, and the direct heat of the mantle heats the flask contents faster, further decreasing energy consumption). Footprint: This one is pretty obvious too: if you are buying a bigger rotovap, you need to make sure that it actually fits inside of your lab: you need to be able to accommodate it. Vacuum Pump: Choosing the right vacuum pump is crucial for efficient rotary evaporation. The pump’s vacuum pressure and flow rate should match the rotovap’s needs to prevent safety hazards, equipment damage, and solvent loss. When scaling up, you’ll need a more powerful pump to handle the increased volume, but using an oversized pump can lead to serious problems. Using an oversized pump could result in vapor clearing out of the condenser too quickly without condensing. The solvent will enter the pump, where it will recondense once exposed to atmospheric pressure, and could cause it to flood. This is especially dangerous with flammable solvents like ethanol. It’s essential to select a pump that provides the correct balance of vacuum pressure and flow rate for your specific process. You can check out one of our previous blog posts where we more intimately discuss pumps and condensers, specifically in Ecodyst rotary evaporators. Scaling up your rotary evaporator process is a pivotal milestone in your laboratory or production facility. To ensure a seamless transition and maximize efficiency, meticulous consideration of several key factors is imperative. Capacity is paramount. Accurately assessing your anticipated production volume will enable you to select a rotary evaporator with a suitable capacity. Oversizing can lead to unnecessary energy consumption, while undersizing may hinder your ability to meet demand. Energy consumption is another critical aspect. Rotary evaporators consume energy for heating, cooling, and vacuum generation. Investing in energy-efficient models can significantly reduce your operational costs and minimize your environmental impact. Footprint is a crucial consideration, particularly in laboratories with limited space. Compact rotary evaporators can help optimize your workspace and improve workflow efficiency. By carefully evaluating these factors and selecting the appropriate equipment, you can effectively and safely scale up your rotary evaporator process, increasing your production output while maintaining quality and efficiency. --- --- title: "The Importance of Proper Vacuum for Rotary Evaporation" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/the-importance-of-proper-vacuum-for-rotary-evaporation/" lastmod: "2023-01-25T04:37:52+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- Using a vacuum source with your rotary evaporator comes with a significant set of advantages, like making your processes safer, more efficient, cleaner, and overall, easier. In this blog post, we’re going through all the reasons why owning a rotary evaporator is typically paired with using a vacuum source (either built-in or a vacuum pump). Depending on the rotary evaporator you’re using, you might already have a built-in vacuum controller and you’ll only need to add a vacuum pump. However, if this isn’t the case, you’ll need to invest in both a pump and a manual (or digital) controller. Controllers don’t come cheap, but there are a few ways to decrease your cost (That we’ll discuss in a future blog post – stay tuned!). Controllable vacuum sources allow you to adjust the pressure with surgical precision, providing you with the desired evaporation rate. An increase in evaporation rate can therefore be achieved without having to upscale your bath’s temperature, which will allow you to achieve evaporation rates previously unattainable using a bath alone. Using a vacuum source also leads to improved solvent-product separation thanks to the controlled and even evaporation rate. It also decreases the risk of bumping (the formation of bubbles due to hasty boiling of samples; This can lead to your sample splashing out of the flask.). In regard to safety, using a vacuum source mitigates many risks. The decrease in boiling point of certain temperature-sensitive compounds reduces the odds of them reacting in your mixture. By reducing the pressure inside of the flask, and in tandem with it, the boiling point of your solvents, you can remove high boiling solvents in a quicker (we’re talking a few minutes, or even seconds) and safer manner. Inherently, you can work at lower bath temperatures, and use water instead of oil in heating baths. This is a safer option since using oil can leave behind residues in your evaporation flask which constitutes a fire hazard in the presence of flammable gas vapors. To sum it up, vacuum makes your processes safer, cheaper, and even easier (specially in cleaning – ever tried cleaning up oil off of your machine?). --- --- title: "The Rule of 20: setting the right temperature for your rotary evaporator" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/the-rule-of-20-setting-the-right-temperature-for-your-rotary-evaporator/" lastmod: "2023-01-25T04:28:18+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- You just bought your rotary evaporator, you set it up on your benchtop after making sure to follow the manual instructions word for word. Everything’s all set and you’re ready to get some work done with your evaporator. And then it hits you: What temperature should you set your rotary evaporator to? Enter the “Rule of 20”, AKA the “20/40/60 Rule” AKA the “Delta 20 Rule”. The Theoretical How In a nutshell, the Rule of 20 states that the temperature of your coolant should be at least 20℃ lower than the vapor’s temperature, and that your bath’s temperature should be 20℃ higher than the vapor temperature or boiling point your are trying to reach. Let’s say that the boiling temperature of your substance is 30℃. You’ll need a coolant temperature of 10℃ and a bath temperature of 50℃ to be operating under optimal conditions. The Why By following the Rule of 20, you’re trying to find the perfect balance between energy usage and process efficiency: Higher bath temperatures merged with lower coolant temperatures increase the distillation’s efficiency. But there’s a catch: the higher the temperature of your bath and the lower your coolant temperature, the more energy you end up spending. This means that at a certain point, investing more energy into your process won’t be impactful on the overall efficiency of the process anymore. The Rule of 20 bypasses this issue by ensuring an efficient distillation. You should keep in mind that in certain scenarios, like working with heat-sensitive compounds, you might be forced to keep your bath’s temperature at levels lower than the one advise by the Rule of 20. The Practical How Now that you’re all set, it’s time to evaporate some solvents! In certain scenarios, and with a bit of luck, you might be able to apply the 20/40/60 rule literally: Simply set your bath temperature to 60℃, your coolant to 20℃, and your vapor temperature to 40℃ using your vacuum controller. By applying vacuum and reducing the boiling point, you can use the same temperature settings for most common solvents. We thought we’d save you some time: you can find the vacuum pressures of some common solvents below. Solvent Boiling Point (°C) Solvent Acetic Acid 118.0 Ethyl Acetate Acetic Acid Anhydride 139.0 Ethyl Ether Acetone 56.3 Ethylene Dichloride Acetonitrile 81.6 Ethylene Glycol Benzene 80.1 Heptane iso-Butanol 107.7 n-Hexane n-Butanol 117.7 Hydrochloric Acid tert-Butanol 82.5 Methanol Carbon Tetrachloride 76.5 Methylene Chloride Chlorobenzene 131.7 MTBE Chloroform 61.2 Pentane Cyclohexane 80.7 Petroleum Ether Cyclopentane 49.3 iso-Propanol Dichloromethane 39.8 n-Propanol Diethyl Ether 34.6 Pyridine Dimethyl Acetamide 166.1 Tetrahydrofuran Dimethyl Formamide 153.0 Toluene Dimethyl Sulfoxide 189.0 Trifluoroacetic Acid Dioxane 101.0 Water Ethanol 78.3 Xylene While the rule of 20 is a good rule of thumb for most evaporative procedures, there is one aspect where it doesn’t hurt to overshoot: cooling. There is no downside to having the coolant even colder than 20℃ below the vapor temperature, and in fact it can help improve evaporation rates to do so. This increases solvent recovery, making your process as efficient as possible. This is where chillers come in, but there’s a trick: chillers lose cooling power as they operate at colder temperatures due to less efficient heat transfer. Enter EcoChyll: by pumping refrigerant directly through the condenser coils from the compressor, the EcoChyll gets colder much faster, and can maintain very low temperatures better than what would be considered a suitably sized chiller hooked up to a rotary evaporator. Some of the advantages of using rotary evaporation 1-Faster Evaporation: One of the primary advantages is the significantly faster evaporation rate achieved with rotary evaporation. The rotating flask creates a thin film of the liquid, maximizing the surface area exposed to the vacuum and heat. This accelerates the evaporation process compared to classical distillation. 2-Efficient for Heat-Sensitive Compounds: Rotary evaporation is particularly beneficial when working with heat-sensitive compounds. The gentle rotation and reduced pressure in the system minimize the exposure of the sample to high temperatures, preserving the integrity of thermally sensitive substances (you can read about how to set the right temperature for your rotary evaporator here). 3-Enhanced Concentration Capability: The increased efficiency of evaporation allows for better concentration of the desired components in the sample. This is advantageous in applications where obtaining a more concentrated solution is essential, such as in the preparation of concentrated extracts or in the concentration of dilute solutions. 4-Reduced Degradation of Compounds: The lower risk of thermal degradation is an advantage, especially when dealing with compounds that may break down or undergo chemical changes at elevated temperatures. Rotary evaporation’s controlled and efficient process helps maintain the stability of delicate compounds. 5-Versatility in Sample Types: Rotary evaporation is versatile and suitable for a wide range of sample types, including those with complex compositions or containing volatile and temperature-sensitive components. This versatility makes it applicable in various fields, from chemistry and biology to the preparation of pharmaceuticals and natural product extractions. Some of the advantages of using Classical distillation 1-Simplicity: Classical distillation is a simpler and more straightforward process compared to rotary evaporation. It involves heating a liquid mixture to create vapor, which is then condensed and collected. There are fewer components and moving parts involved, making it easier to set up and operate. 2-Scale: Classical distillation can be easily scaled up for large-scale industrial applications. It’s commonly used in industries such as petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and the production of alcoholic beverages, where large quantities of liquids need to be separated (however, our rotary evaporators allow for more scaling than any other rotary evaporator on the market, scaling up to 200L true capacity). Efficiency Classical Distillation: Classical distillation is a well-established and straightforward method that is widely employed for various separation processes. Its simplicity makes it accessible for routine application in labs and industries. However, classical distillation may have limitations in terms of speed, especially when dealing with mixtures that require precise temperature control. Maintaining specific temperatures throughout the process can extend the overall duration of distillation. In terms of energy consumption, classical distillation does not offer any edge over rotary evaporation. Rotary Evaporation: Rotary evaporation is recognized for its efficiency, particularly in scenarios where speed is essential. The unique design of rotary evaporators enhances the evaporation process, making it more efficient for certain applications. On top of this, our rotary evaporators at Ecodyst are far more energy efficient (they use over 50% less electricity) than classical rotary evaporators. The Process Classical Distillation: In classical Distillation, heat is applied to the entire liquid mixture in the flask. As the liquid reaches its boiling point, and vapor rises through the column, condensation occurs in the condenser leading to the collection of the liquid in a separate flask. Rotary Evaporation: The rotation of the flask serves a crucial role in the process: by increasing the liquid’s surface area, a thin film of the liquid is created on the inner surface of the flask, maximizing the exposure to vacuum, and promoting faster evaporation. Vapors are condensed in a separate condenser and collected in a receiving flask. Equipment Used Classical Distillation: Typically involves a round-bottom flask containing the liquid mixture Vapors rise through a column and enter a condenser, where they are cooled and condensed Recirculating chiller The condensed liquid is collected in a separate flask Rotary Evaporation: Rotary evaporator, which includes a round-bottom flask attached to a rotating mechanism A condenser is used to collect and condense the vapors, similar to classical distillation Vacuum pump Recirculating chiller or other cooled condenser ( In the case of the EcoChyll X1, a chiller with no tank, no coolant liquid, and which achieves its setpoint temperature in just one minute!) Classical Distillation: Routine Separations Routine Purifications Isolation of components Rotary Evaporation: Purification of Volatile or Temperature-Sensitive Compounds Laboratory Synthesis in Sensitive Environments (synthesis of compounds with low boiling points) Chemistry and Biochemistry Routine Separations Routine Purifications Isolation of components To sum things up, while classical distillation is cheaper to set up, and has less chances of running into technical problems (due to the simplicity of its setup), the practical advantages offered by rotary evaporation outweigh those of classical distillation. Rotary Evaporation 1 – 0 Classical Distillation --- --- title: "Understanding how Cold Traps are Used in Vacuum Applications" canonical: "https://ecodyst.com/understanding-cold-traps-vacuum-applications/" lastmod: "2022-05-03T10:07:11+00:00" generator: "llm-mirrors/1.0.23" --- Cold traps are used to condense vapors present in vacuum applications into a solid or liquid state (excluding permanent gases). The main function of a cold trap is to ensure that there is no contamination inside vacuum applications. Whilst experiments are conducted, containers must sit airtight so no vapor can escape and no extra gas can enter the chamber and cold traps work to stop this. How Does a Cold Trap Work? Cold traps are usually made up of two parts, the bottom being a large, thick round tube with ground glass joints. The second is a cap that also has ground-glass connections. The length of the tube is selected so that the cap reaches about half the length. Cold traps should be assembled so that the down tube connects to the gas source whilst the cap is connected to the vacuum source. This means that vapor phase condensate is unlikely to move up the tube. Cold traps condense incoming vapors in the chamber to inhibit contamination. It is particularly useful for the removal of large quantities of liquid in freeze-drying. Cold Trap Applications Cold traps are used in applications in which the process is coming over in the form of a vapor and must be trapped. There is a range of different traps that can be tailored to the chemical composition of the process. Some processes have gasses that travel in a vapor form and can easily be trapped once rapidly cooled. This means that the vapor condenses and the condensation can be collected in the trap. Cold traps are often used in applications that require low-temperature conditions via evaporators such as distillation and condensation. In these applications, the cold trap contains a freezing mixture of dry ice or a coolant and acetone. Cold Traps and Rotary Evaporators Cold traps play a critical role in traditional rotary evaporators as it traps gas on a cooled surface in a coagulated manner. The cold trap is placed in between a vacuum vessel and a pump for trapping oil vapor or adsorbing gas. The cold trap is lined with a lead gasket and connected to the vacuum pump and suction container. The cold trap adsorbs heat from the condenser, keeping the temperatures low, and when gas passes through the water vapor and other gases solidify on the condenser. This then increases the degree of vacuum. Why Ecodyst’s Revolutionary Technology Replaces Cold Traps Traditional rotovaps used cold traps that require material such as liquid nitrogen or anti-freeze to cool them. However, Ecodyst’s new revolutionary technology uses continuous cooling, eliminating the need for excess, expensive, and energy inefficient cooling technology.
